Description: In this one-hour webinar, Dr. Namratha Kandula, MD, MPH, will present an overview of “The Relationship between Body Weight, Adiposity, and Cardiovascular Risk among South Asian Americans.” Body weight is closely related to several known cardiovascular risk factors, but the relationship between body weight and cardiovascular risk varies by race and ethnicity. In this presentation, Dr. Kandula will focus on South Asian Americans, a population that has a high burden of cardiovascular risk, even at a lower body weight. She will describe the prevalence of metabolic abnormalities and subclinical cardiovascular disease in South Asians across body mass index levels and will introduce the concept of “lean with high metabolic risk” and illuminate how body composition and adipose tissue may explain this phenomena. Dr. Kandula is Professor of Medicine and Preventive Medicine at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine and an internationally-recognized researcher in the field of South Asian cardiovascular health and community-engaged research to reduce cardiovascular disparities. Dr. Kandula is a co-PI of the Mediators of Atherosclerosis in South Asians Living in America (MASALA) study, which is the first longitudinal cardiovascular cohort study focused on understanding the development and progression of cardiovascular disease in South Asian Americans. She is also the lead investigator of two NIH-funded clinical trials on lifestyle interventions to improve cardiovascular health among South Asian Americans.
