Demystifying Medicine - Biophotonics: From Light Pulses to Heart Pulses: Viewing Life on the Inside
Biophotonics is a term that broadly describes the use of photons, or light particles, to examine or manipulate biological materials such as molecules, cells and tissues. The field melds physics, biology, chemistry, and engineering, and its clinical applications are both abundant and spectacular.
Tromberg is a leader in this field, with more than a dozen patents for biophotonics technologies and their applications in areas such as cancer, neuroscience and vascular disease. This includes laser techniques for the multi-dimensional visualization of cell and tissue physiology. In addition to overseeing the nearly $400 million budget of the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering, Tromberg is also a principal investigator in the NICHD Section on Biomedical Optics. Among his goals at the NIH is to make biophotonics more translational by applying these techniques to protocols in the NIH Clinical Center.
The Demystifying Medicine Lecture Series is designed to help bridge the gap between advances in biology and their applications to major human diseases. The lectures include presentations of patients, pathology, diagnosis, and therapy in the context of major diseases and current research. All clinicians, trainees including fellows, medical students, Ph.D. students, and other healthcare and research professionals are welcome to attend.
