||NIH Advisory Committee on Research on Women's Health semi-annual meeting
The Office of Research on Women’s Health (ORWH) has collaborated with the NIH Institutes, Centers, and Offices; external stakeholders; and the public to develop this 5-year plan that provides a framework for guiding NIH research and programs that relate to the health of women and women in biomedical careers.
We are hosting several prominent guest speakers at the meeting, including The Honorable Barbara A. Mikulski from Maryland, the state’s longest tenured U.S. senator and the longest serving woman in the history of Congress. She was instrumental in helping to establish ORWH and continues to advocate for improved health for women in the U.S., particularly through better science. Senator Mikulski will be joined by her former colleague, Ambassador Connie Morella, who is on the faculty of American University, and previously served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1986 to 2002. Ambassador Morella has a long history of advocacy for women and will provide brief remarks.
Additional speakers include Dr. Griffin P. Rodgers, Director of the NIH National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK). Dr. Rodgers is widely recognized for his contributions to the development of the first effective — and now FDA-approved — therapy for sickle cell anemia and will provide an update on NIDDK research relevant to the health of women.
Dr. Wendy M. Kohrt, a Professor of Medicine in the Division of Geriatric Medicine at the University of Colorado and the Nancy Anschutz Endowed Chair in Women's Health Research also will present scientific advances from their Specialized Center of Research on Sex Differences (SCOR) program, co-funded by ORWH and NIDDK. In addition, the meeting will include updates on recent ORWH research and program activities.
