Description: Visionary Anatomies
A Symposium at the National Library of Medicine

Anatomical showmanship goes back to anatomy's origins as a scientific discipline: for centuries, anatomy contained a theatrical element that was amazing, but troubling. Today, we are seeing a revival of anatomical spectacle. The work of anatomist Gunther von Hagens, Damien Hirst and other artists, and a host of popular films and television shows featuring graphic images of the body and its interior, have sparked new debates about the meaning, uses, ethics and history of anatomical display. Visionary Anatomies brings together scholars from the fields of anatomy, medicine, cultural history, museum studies, anthropology and the history of medicine and science to discuss the vital issues that attend the art and science of anatomy and anatomical presentation, past and present.
