Description: Avindra Nath, M.D., is a Senior Investigator and Clinical Director of NINDS. His expertise includes neuropathogenesis of HIV infection; the role of endogenous retroviruses in neurological diseases; and undiagnosed Neuroimmune and neuroinfectious diseases. LECTURE SUMMARY: Infection with SARS-CoV-2 can cause a variety of neurological syndromes. In the acute phase this includes loss of small and taste, strokes and in some cases sudden death. In the subacute phase a number of CNS inflammatory syndromes may occur. The most concerning however is the long-term complication of Long-COVID which presents with a variety of central and peripheral nervous system manifestations. Immune mediated vascular damage, viral persistence and innate immune activation have been implicated in the pathophysiology of the syndrome. The NIH intramural program made extraordinary efforts in elucidating the clinic-pathological findings and is now conducting deep clinical phenotyping understand the subtypes of Long-COVD and develop a rational approach for disease modifying therapies. OBJECTIVES: (1) To recognize the acute and long-term neurological complications of COVID-19; (2) To describe the neuropathology and pathophysiological mechanisms of COVID-19 and the gaps in knowledge. (3) To develop a rational approach for identifying therapeutic targets for Long-COVID-19
