More than half of adults and one-third of children in the United States take one or more dietary supplements such as multivitamins, omega-3 fish oil, St. John’s wort, or melatonin. During this presentation, nutrition scientists from the NIH Office of Dietary Supplements (ODS) will provide an overview of dietary supplements and describe what you need to know to inform your decision-making about whether or when to take these products.

Joseph M. Betz, Ph.D., ODS Acting Director, will give a brief introduction to this seminar.

Carol J. Haggans, M.S., Registered Dietitian and ODS Scientific and Health Communications Consultant, leads ODS’s public inquiry program. She researches and responds to questions from consumers, health professionals, and the media about dietary supplements. Ms. Haggans also writes and updates the ODS dietary supplement fact sheets and the ODS consumer newsletter, The Scoop.

Paul R. Thomas, Ed.D., Registered Dietitian Nutritionist and ODS Scientific and Health Communications Consultant, writes and updates dietary supplement fact sheets and other educational materials and responds to questions from the media. Dr. Thomas also coordinates the Federal Working Group on Dietary Supplements, which serves as a means of communication between ODS and its federal partners including those at NIH.
