Dr. Peter Crompton studies the immunology and epidemiology of Plasmodium falciparum malaria in Africa. He came to the NIH as a NIAID Infectious Disease Fellow in 2004 after earning his MD and MPH from the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and Public Health in 2000 and completing a residency in internal medicine at the Massachusetts General Hospital in 2003. In 2006 Dr. Crompton joined the Laboratory of Immunogenetics at NIAID to pursue his research interest in malaria. He is currently senior investigator and chief of the Malaria Infection Biology & Immunity Section at NIAID. Through the NIAID International Centers for Excellence in Research program, and in close collaboration with an outstanding team of clinicians and scientists at the University of Sciences, Technique and Technology of Bamako in Mali, Dr. Crompton and his team conduct longitudinal cohort studies in areas of intense seasonal malaria transmission. The overall goals of these studies are 1) to investigate the mechanisms and targets of immunity to malaria by prospectively identifying malaria-resistant individuals, and 2) to understand how the P. falciparum parasite modulates the host response to evade clearance. In his seminar Dr. Crompton will present recent discoveries from the Mali cohort including a new role for NK cells in protection against blood-stage malaria, as well as evidence that p53 contributes to the control of malaria-induced inflammation. Recent efforts to discover and eventually test monoclonal antibodies that may protect from malaria will also be described. By deepening the field’s understanding of the infection biology and immunology of human malaria, Dr. Crompton and his team hope to inform the development of new tools to fight this devastating disease. Dr. Crompton is a member of the American Society for Clinical Investigation. He is a recipient of the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers, and the Bailey K. Ashford Medal, awarded by the American Society of Tropical Medicine & Hygiene for “distinguished work in tropical medicine by a mid-career professional.”
