Description: This seminar will bring together researchers, medical practitioners, and others to explore topics in rural health and to share research ideas for how innovations in clinical and translational science could improve rural health outcomes. It is a collaborative event co-sponsored by NCATS, NIMH and NIMHD, with additional contributions from NCI, NHLBI, NIA, NICHD, NIDA, NIDCR, NIDDK, NIGMS and NINR.

Today, approximately 20 percent of the U.S. population—about 60 million people—live in rural areas. People living in rural America experience less access to health care and are more likely than their urban counterparts to die from heart disease, cancer, stroke, and chronic lower respiratory disease. The disparities and health care challenges facing rural America call for additional rigorous scientific research, successful implementation of evidence-based practices in rural settings, and the use of innovative technology to improve outcomes.

The agenda features many colleagues from across NIH:

• Dr. Eliseo J. Pérez-Stable, Director, NIMHD
• Dr. Gary H. Gibbons, Director, NHLBI
• Dr. Shelli Avenevoli, Deputy Director, NIMH
• Dr. Michael G. Kurilla, Director, DCI, NCATS
• Dr. Jon R. Lorsch, Director, NIGMS
• Dr. Diana W. Bianchi, Director, NICHD
• Dr. Wilson Compton, Deputy Director, NIDA
• Dr. Andrea Beckel-Mitchener, Director, Office for Disparities Research and Workforce Diversity, NIMH
Runtime: 2 hours, 30 minutes
