Description: The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) presents the Integrative Medicine Research Lecture series. The series provides overviews of the current state of research and practice involving complementary health therapies, and explores perspectives on the emerging discipline of integrative medicine. Richard Nahin, Ph.D., M.P.H, is NCCAM's Senior Advisor for Scientific Coordination and Outreach. Dr. Nahin's talk will discuss the use of complementary health approaches. Trying to get a complete picture of the use of complementary health approaches is analogous to the story of the blind men and the elephant. Looking at only one aspect of use does not give you the true picture. This lecture illustrates this point by giving examples from a variety of data, including surveys of the public and health professional, marketing/sales data, data from the NCCAM Clearinghouse, data from professional associations, insurance data, Google trends data, and structured interviews. Selected complementary health approaches will be examined with trends over time highlighted. For more information, go to http://nccam.nih.gov/news/events/IMlectures.
