Description: Nonopioid natural products that show promise for being effective and nonaddictive for pain are urgently needed, as part of the nationwide effort to address the pain and opioid crises. Many barriers have existed, however, in the study of such products for this purpose. Natural products and Pain: The Search for Novel Nonopioid Analgesics

“Natural Products and Pain” has as its goals to discuss these challenges and to facilitate identification of novel, nonopioid products to help treat and/or manage pain. Talks will be organized around promising, known, nonopioid classes of natural products from various sources, and walk through processes of discovery and development. Discussion will focus on how to identify promising leads based on traditional medicine; discover and identify active natural products; and characterize the mechanisms through which they act.

The workshop is chaired by David Julius, Ph.D., professor and chair of the physiology department at the University of California-San Francisco School of Medicine. Dr. Julius is an expert of international renown on the molecular biology of how signals are received and transmitted by the nervous system, including in touch and pain.
