Description: Optical imaging is rapidly becoming a useful tool in detecting surface malignancies as well as improving the tumor margins during surgical resections, thereby potentially catching lesions in a less advanced state and also decreasing tumor recurrence. However, there is a gap in the pace of clinical evaluation of these novel agents and devices, partly due to a lack of understanding of the regulatory pathways that need to be followed. The mission of the Cancer Imaging Program includes facilitating clinical evaluation of promising methodologies that can improve cancer care. To this end, we are hosting a one day workshop along with the FDA and two professional societies – the International Society of Image Guided Surgery (ISIGS) and the World Molecular Imaging Society (WMIS) to discuss these issues on May 4th.
