| Description: | In this one-hour webinar, Dr. Denise E. Wilfley, PhD, will present an overview of a family-based and socio-environmental approach to childhood obesity.” She will discuss how obesity is a complex health condition often involving genetic, environmental, socioeconomic, and systemic health factors not under the control of the individual. She will highlight the increasing prevalence of childhood obesity in the U.S. over the past 4 decades and the increased risk for immediate and later health consequences. Finally, Dr. Wilfley will review several lines of her research including the development of an efficacious socioecological approach to family-based behavioral treatment (FBT), translation of FBT into pediatric primary care settings, transgenerational and non-treated sibling effects, and the establishment of broad partnerships to reduce health disparities and address barriers to treatment. Dr. Wilfley is the Scott Rudolph University Professor of Psychiatry, Medicine, Pediatrics, and Psychological and Brain Sciences, and Director of the Center for Healthy Weight and Wellness at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, MO. She is an international authority on the causes, prevention, and treatment of obesity and eating disorders and has published over 350 peer-reviewed research publications in leading medical journals and has an h-index of 80 (Scopus, September, 2024). She has a longstanding track record of research funding from agencies such as NIH, AHRQ, CDC, PCORI, and others. |
