Description: | COVID-19 Scientific Interest Group
In less than three years, the novel coronavirusSARS-CoV-2 has caused more than half a billion cases of COVID-19 and nearly six and a half million deaths globally. Through longstanding investments in basic research and well-developed clinical trial networks, NIAID made major contributions to the development of safe and effective COVID-19 vaccines and therapeutics, in record time. However, a combination of waning vaccine immunity and the repeated emergence and spread of SARS-CoV-2 variants with enhanced transmissibility and immune evasiveness have led to the need for booster shots and updated vaccines more closely aligned with currently circulating variants. Innovative research to develop broadly protective coronavirus vaccines, vaccines with the potential to block transmission, and additional therapeutics must continue. The COVID-19 pandemic has provided multiple lessons that can be applied to future infectious disease threats and underscores the importance of basic and applied research for addressing viral families with pandemic potential..
