\n\nGrowing new tissues and organs is a promising approach to replace those lost to disease or trauma. The overall hypothesis guiding our studies is that the gene expression of cells in an engineered tissue, and the overall structure and function of the tissue, may be actively controlled by temporally regulating the presentation of information to the cells from biomaterials. The specific signals designed into the material are based on established regulatory mechanisms for the desired tissue. We have now demonstrated that controlling the mechanism of cell adhesion to materials used as delivery vehicles allows one to regulate the growth (e.g., increase with mass over time) and development of engineered tissues. \n
