Description:	Dr. Jeffrey Peters completed his graduate training at the University of California at Davis followed by postdoctoral fellowships at the Institute of Toxicology and Environmental Health at UC Davis, and then in the Laboratory of Metabolism at the National Cancer Institute. Dr. Peters has performed seminal research concerning the biological role of the PPAR class of nuclear receptors. His more recent research has focused on elucidating functional roles of PPARb/d in disease. His research has had a profound impact on the risk assessment of a broad range of chemicals, helping to focus mechanistic research on the extrapolation of effects in animal models to humans. Additionally, his studies have provided clues to new molecular targets that may be suitable for the treatment and prevention of cancer. Dr. Peters is a charter member of the Chemo/Dietary Prevention study section, he has served on a number of national committees, and he is on a variety of editorial boards in addition to serving as an Associate Editor for Toxicological Sciences. He has received a number of awards including the 2007 Society of Toxicology Achievement Award and the Black Award for Excellence in Research at Penn State. The NIH Director's Wednesday Afternoon Lecture Series includes weekly scientific talks by some of the top researchers in the biomedical sciences worldwide.

From Dr. Peters: "PPAR ̀was the first of three PPARs identified less than twenty years ago, followed shortly by discovery of the related PPAR/́ ̃and PPAR.̂ As the physiological roles of PPARs began to unfold, it became clear that these receptors have great potential as therapeutic targets for disease. PPARs belong to the nuclear hormone receptor superfamily and are likely modulated by fatty acids and lipid metabolites that act as endogenous ligands for PPARs. In response to ligand activation, PPARs form transcriptional complexes that facilitate up-regulation in the expression of target genes that regulate lipid homeostasis. Through this classic receptor-mediated mechanism, PPARs act as cellular sensors and modulate physiological processes including adipogenesis and lipid storage, fatty acid catabolism in liver, heart and skeletal muscle, glucose metabolism, insulin resistance and others. In addition to the direct transcriptional-mediated mechanism, emerging evidence indicates that PPARs also have indirect anti-inflammatory activities through binding to and inhibiting other transcription factors including NF-kB and AP1. Given their central role in modulating numerous metabolic pathways and their anti-inflammatory activities, it is not surprising that a number of compounds with affinity for PPARs are targeted for the treatment and prevention of diseases ranging from type 2 diabetes, dyslipidemias, metabolic syndrome and cancers. This presentation will provide a summary of the functional roles of PPAR,̀ PPAR/́ ̃and PPAR,̂ with a focus on the potential to apply this knowledge for the treatment and prevention of diseases." The NIH Director's Wednesday Afternoon Lecture Series includes weekly scientific talks by some of the top researchers in the biomedical sciences worldwide.
