Description:	Is there a biochemical basis for obesity and substance use disorders? What are the complex motivational behaviors underlying cravings for food or intoxicating substances? Can a relatively new class of weight loss medications known as glucagon-like peptide–1 (GLP–1) receptor agonists also treat alcohol use disorder? These will be some of the discussions we will be having during the April 2 Demystifying Medicine. Dr. Friedman is an HHMI Investigator and the Marylin M. Simpson Professor at The Rockefeller University. His discovery of the hormone leptin and its role in regulating body weight via the CNS refocused the study of obesity beginning in the 1990s. His current work explores the mechanisms by which leptin regulates energy balance and seeks to identify other key regulators of body weight. Dr. Leggio is the NIDA Clinical Director and Deputy Scientific Director and senior investigator in the joint NIDA/NIAAA Clinical Psychoneuroendocrinology and Neuropsychopharmacology Section in the Translational Addiction Medicine Branch. His lab strives to understand mechanisms underlying addiction and to identify new therapeutic targets. They use bidirectional translational approaches that span from basic science to experimental medicine proof-of-concept clinical studies with patients with addictive disorders. Areas of interest include the intersection between addictive disorders and obesity with a focus on neuroendocrine systems, gut-brain axis, and other peripheral-central pathways. The Demystifying Medicine Series, jointly sponsored by FAES and NIH, includes presentations on pathology, diagnosis, and therapy in the context of major disease problems and current research. Primarily directed toward PhD students, clinicians and program managers, this series is designed to help bridge the gap between advances in biology and their application to major human diseases.
