Description:	Not since the headline of man bites dog has Demystifying Medicine offered a more exciting pairing of NIH scientists on the topic of genetics, appearance, behavior, and disease susceptibility. Together, the talks will reveal how we use genomics to study complex traits. Dr. Ostrander is an NIH Distinguished Investigator in the NHGRI Cancer Genetics and Comparative Genomics Branch. Her lab has long championed the canine system for the study of complex traits. In analyzing whole genome sequences, they have demonstrated that most breed-defining traits, such as body size and leg length, are controlled by small numbers of genes. Similar variants, when observed in humans, often are associated with anomalies in appearance or behavior or cause disease susceptibility. For her talk, Ostrander will explore these themes, focusing on the genetics of breed formation, behavior, and cancer Dr. Shaw leads the Neurobehavioral Clinical Research Section in the NHGRI Social and Behavioral Research Branch. His research program examines the interplay of genomic and environmental factors in shaping the developmental trajectories of human brain and behavior. His lab focuses on one of the most common and heritable childhood mental illnesses, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). For his talk, Shaw will discuss his lab's goal of translating genomic and neural discoveries into clinically useful tools, in part by developing a set of prognostic biomarkers that predict the likely adult outcome of a child's ADHD at a clinically useful level. The Demystifying Medicine Series, jointly sponsored by FAES and NIH, includes presentations on pathology, diagnosis, and therapy in the context of major disease problems and current research. Primarily directed toward PhD students, clinicians and program managers, this series is designed to help bridge the gap between advances in biology and their application to major human diseases.
