Description:	This will be another fantastic pairing of substance addiction experts who will share their assessment of the opioid epidemic coupled with real-life examples of people directly impacted by substance addiction. Our first speaker, Dr. Volkow, who also in a senior investigator in the Laboratory of Neuroimaging in the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, has been instrumental in demonstrating that drug addiction is a brain disorder. As a research psychiatrist, she has pioneered the use of brain imaging to investigate how substance use affects brain functions. Her studies have documented how changes in the dopamine system affect the functions of brain regions involved with reward and self-control in addiction. Our second speaker, Ms. Perry, is founder of the Meghann Perry Group, which offers innovative solutions and educational programs across the full spectrum of prevention, harm reduction, and recovery using theater, storytelling, and recovery coaching techniques. As a storyteller and keynote speaker, Perry draws on her professional work as well as her own experience with substance use, mental health challenges, and the many systems they intersect to address some of the biggest questions we face in the current climate of substance use. The Demystifying Medicine Series, jointly sponsored by FAES and NIH, includes presentations on pathology, diagnosis, and therapy in the context of major disease problems and current research. Primarily directed toward PhD students, clinicians and program managers, this series is designed to help bridge the gap between advances in biology and their application to major human diseases. Each session includes clinical and basic science components presented by NIH staff and invitees. All students, trainees, fellows, and staff are welcome to participate.
