This Demystifying Medicine will comprise complementary lectures on hearing loss, from the current state-of-the-art treatment such as cochlear implants to promise of biological approaches to prevent or reverse hearing loss, one of the most common health problems in the United States. This set of lectures will feature a trio of leading NIH investigators — Ronna Hertzano, M.D., Ph.D. (NIDCD), Matthew Kelley, Ph.D. (NIDCD), and Shawn Burgess, Ph.D. (NHGRI) — and will take place on March 5 from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. ET in the first-floor conference room of Building 50. The session also will feature a patient with hearing loss treated at the NIH Clinical Center who will speak of their medical journey. The Demystifying Medicine Series, jointly sponsored by FAES and NIH, includes presentations on pathology, diagnosis, and therapy in the context of major disease problems and current research. Primarily directed toward PhD students, clinicians and program managers, this series is designed to help bridge the gap between advances in biology and their application to major human diseases. Each session includes clinical and basic science components presented by NIH staff and invitees. All students, trainees, fellows, and staff are welcome to participate.
