Description:	Our first speaker, Gabriel Vecchi, is a professor of geosciences, director of the High Meadows Environmental Institute, and deputy director of the Cooperative Institute for Modeling the Earth System at Princeton University. He will speak about the impact of extreme weather events, such as the horrific consequences of climate change for the Indo-Gangetic Plain, and the expected dominant drivers of extreme weather in the decades to come. Our second speaker, Michael Sawka, is an adjunct professor of biological sciences at Georgia Institute of Technology and served for more than 30 years as a research physiologist with the U.S. Army Medical Research and Development Command. An expert in environmental (heat, cold, high-altitude) physiology, Sawka will speak about the impact of extreme hot weather on impairing human activities and bioengineering interventions to manage heat strain. The Demystifying Medicine Series, jointly sponsored by FAES and NIH, includes presentations on pathology, diagnosis, and therapy in the context of major disease problems and current research. Primarily directed toward PhD students, clinicians and program managers, this series is designed to help bridge the gap between advances in biology and their application to major human diseases. Each session includes clinical and basic science components presented by NIH staff and invitees. All students, trainees, fellows, and staff are welcome to participate.
