Dr. Biesecker is an NIH Distinguished Investigator in the NHGRI Center for Precision Health Research; Dr. Denny is the CEO of the NIH All of Us Research Program and head of the NHGRI Precision Health Informatics Section. Their combined presentations will highlight the strengths and weaknesses of the current approach to disease diagnosis and treatment. Specifically, they will review two novel approaches to diagnosis: the Genomic Ascertainment Analysis, and the Phenotype Risk Score analysis from Electronic Health Records. These techniques can help identify undiagnosed individuals, address underdiagnosis, and reduce healthcare disparities. They also will discuss the NIH-supported All of Us Research Program, which is recruiting at least 1 million diverse individuals across the United States to accelerate precision health relevant to all populations. A patient presentation during the session will illustrate the practical impact of these approaches to healthcare. The Demystifying Medicine Series includes presentations on pathology, diagnosis, and therapy in the context of major disease problems and current research. Primarily directed toward PhD students, clinicians and program managers, this series is designed to help bridge the gap between advances in biology and their application to major human diseases. Each session includes clinical and basic science components presented by NIH staff and invitees. All students, trainees, fellows, and staff are welcome to participate.
