Description:	Wednesday Afternoon Lecture Series This is the annual Robert S. Gordon Jr. Lecture, sponsored by NIH Office of Disease Prevention. Dr. Wing is a professor of psychiatry and human behavior at Brown University, recognized broadly for her research excellence on behavioral treatment of obesity and its application to type 2 diabetes. She co-led the Diabetes Prevention Program and developed the lifestyle intervention used in all 27 centers in that study. More recently, she was the principal investigator at The Miriam Hospital site for a 15-center trial, called Look AHEAD, and served as chair of this multisite study for more than 20 years. Dr. Wing will discuss the controversial and complex topic of whether older individuals with diabetes and obesity should be encouraged to lose weight. She will describe the state-of-the art intervention used in Look AHEAD and the initial and long-term weight losses achieved, with recognition of the gains and surprising shortfalls of intensive lifestyle intervention.
