Dr. Extavour is a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigator and the Timken Professor of Organismic and Evolutionary Biology and of Molecular and Cellular Biology at Harvard. Her lab exploits the disciplines of molecular genetics, protein chemistry, and mathematical modeling to understand germ cell evolution at a molecular and ecological level.

In studying Drosophila and non-traditional model organisms, Extavour has uncovered novel mechanisms and general principles of embryonic germline and gonad morphogenesis, with implications for understanding human infertility. She also has discovered ways that environmental pressures on reproduction rate help steer evolution.
