Small ion movement through the translocon pore during integration is regulated by a complex choreography of interactions between the ribosome, translocon, BiP, and probably other molecular species. We have used fluorescence spectroscopy, fluorescence resonance energy transfer, and photocrosslinking to examine intermediates at various stages of integration.\n
