Description:	Demystifying Medicine Lecture Series Washington Post Health and Science editor Stephen Smith will describe the newspaper's decisions in reporting science to the general public; and Science editor Valda Vinson, Ph.D., will discuss how science… and Science… adapted to the pandemic. Smith became the Post's Health and Science editor during an emerging pandemic, in July 2020. Pressed into service, he and his colleagues needed to present a mix of breaking news, accurate health information, and fair criticism of the often-confused U.S. response to the pandemic. One challenge that Smith faced was to not politicize pandemic reporting in the midst of unprecedented politicizing at a national and federal level over such basic recommendations as mask-wearing and crowd-avoidance. Dr. Vinson joined the Science staff in 1999 and was assigned to review research papers in the areas of structural biology, biochemistry and biophysics as an associate and then a senior editor. She became a deputy editor at Science in 2013 and Editor for Research in 2018. Steering Science through the pandemic brought a host of challenges, such as expediting pandemic-related science findings through the peer-review process, publishing science that drives policy amidst the challenge of a politicized environment, and continuing to publish important non-COVID-related research.
