Description:	Demystifying Medicine Lecture Series The human microbiome — comprising the trillions of microorganisms that live on and in us — is both an ancient and poorly explored frontier, defining our evolution and influencing our health in yet unknown ways. Only in recent decades have we begun to understand the importance of the microbiome in preventing a broad range of diseases, such as obesity, diabetes, Parkinson's disease, and cancer. Yasmine Belkaid, Ph.D., is an NIH Distinguished Investigator and chief of the NIAID Metaorganism Immunity Section. Her laboratory aims to understand the mechanisms controlling host microbe interactions at barrier sites such as the skin and the gut. Her work has demonstrated that commensal organisms on the skin and in the gut play a critical role in host defense. She has found that dietary factors control the induction of effector and regulatory responses in the gut, in particular, such as the induction of T cells and dendritic cells with regulatory functions. Giorgio Trinchieri, M.D. is an NIH Distinguished Investigator, chief of the NCI Laboratory of Integrative Cancer Immunology, and head of the Cancer Immunology Section. His lab's current focus is the role of inflammation, innate resistance, and commensal microbiota in carcinogenesis, cancer progression, and therapy of cancer. He has previously identified the interplay between inflammation, adaptive immunity, and of the role of cytokines and interferons in the regulation of infections and cancer.
