Description:	Demystifying Medicine Lecture Series Multiple sclerosis was first well described in 1868 by Jean-Martin Charcot, a neurologist at the famed Hôpital universitaire la Pitié-Salpêtrière in Paris, as "la sclérose en plaques," numerous scars on the white matter of the brain and spinal cord. The three most reliable indicators of multiple sclerosis—intention tremor, nystagmus, and scanning speech—became known as Charcot's triad. More than 150 years later, MS remains challenging to treat but is less mysterious. MS is recognized as an autoimmune disease. And recent studies reveal the interaction of T and B cells in MS pathogenesis, suggesting novel treatment pathways. Bibiana Bielekova, M.D., is chief of the NIAID Neuroimmunological Diseases Section. Alison Wichman, M.D., is a neurologist and clinician in Dr. Bielekova's lab. Together, the seek to understand the mechanisms that participate in central nervous system injury, as well as those that have neuroprotective functions, to develop effective therapies for neuroimmunological diseases such as multiple sclerosis. They use proof-of-principle interventional trials supported by biomarker–mechanistic studies and mathematical modeling to investigate major hypotheses about the pathophysiology of MS.
