Description:	Demystifying Medicine Lecture Series Cynthia Dunbar, M.D., is an NIH Distinguished Investigator and head of the NHLBI Molecular Hematopoiesis Section. Dunbar's research focuses on understanding the differentiation of stem cells into multiple types of blood cells in vivo. Working with non-human primates, Dunbar has been an international leader in improving the safety of gene transfer and the transplantation of primary hematopoietic (blood) cells for therapeutic purposes in human clinical trials. Harry Malech, M.D., is chief of the NIAID Genetic Immunotherapy Section (GIS), where he applies gene therapy and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation approaches to the treatment of a variety of inherited primary immune deficiencies. Malech's gene therapy program — the gist of GIS —focuses particularly on bench and clinical developments of gene transfer treatments for X-linked chronic granulomatous disease (CGD) and X-linked severe combined immune deficiency (X-SCID).
