Description:	Demystifying Medicine Lecture Series The Demystifying Medicine course series continues with presentations by NIAID's Luigi Notarangelo and Barney Graham, who will speak about the immunological and genetic dance that determines COVID-19 survival rates and the development of vaccine, respectively. Luigi Notarangelo, M.D., is chief of NIAID's Laboratory of Clinical Immunology and Microbiology, where, ante-pandemus, he studied molecular and cellular bases of novel forms of human primary immune deficiency. Early in 2020, Notarangelo and others saw that COVID-19 survival was dependent on genetic underpinnings of one's immune system, as well as factors such as age and obesity. In his presentation, Notarangelo will elucidate how advanced immunology studies may predict who becomes infected with SARS-COV-2 and, if so, who will have a benign or life-threatening course Barney Graham, M.D., Ph.D., is deputy director of the NIAID Vaccine Research Center. Building upon their existing work on a coronavirus vaccine, Graham and his colleagues incorporated the viral sequence of SARS-COV-2 and worked with the company Moderna to ready a vaccine candidate for Phase 1 clinical trial in a dizzying two months. In his presentation, Graham will discuss the remarkable progress in identifying the key structural components of infectious agents and subsequently rapidly developing vaccines to prevent the next pandemic.
