Description: The Ceremonial Presentation of the 2020 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine to Dr. Harvey J. Alter for his contributions to the discovery of the hepatitis C virus. Nobel Laureate Dr. Alter shares the prize with Michael Houghton, University of Alberta, and Charles Rice, Rockefeller University. Traditionally, Dr. Alter would have traveled to Stockholm, Sweden to receive his Nobel Prize. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Nobel medal and diploma were presented to him on the NIH campus by the Swedish Ambassador Karin Olofstotter. NIH Director Dr. Francis Collins provided opening and closing remarks at the ceremony.
