Treatment of chronic pain in recent years, specifically through the use of powerful opioid-based pain relievers, has led to an epidemic of addiction. The overuse of these opioid drugs, from either prescription or illegal sources, contributed to more than 70,000 drug-overdose deaths in the United States in 2018. This represents the greatest addiction crisis ever faced by the United States, as the number of overdose deaths exceed that of car accidents and gun deaths and is a leading killer of young people. While the opioid epidemic may be well known to the NIH community, lesser known may be the breadth of remarkable work on addiction and alternative pain relief taking place in NIH labs and clinics. This will be the focus of this Demystifying Medicine presentation. Volkow is the NIDA Director. Aside from being a world-renown expert on addiction, she oversees a research portfolio that supports a multitude of laboratories directly addressing the opioid epidemic. Bushnell is the NCCIH Scientific Director. Her research aims to understand the brain's role in perceiving, modifying, and managing pain, with a special emphasis on non-pharmacological modulation of pain.
