Demystifying Medicine Lecture Series

HIV remains a devastating disease, yet NIH research has helped to control its spread and to mitigate its effect, transforming what was once certain death into a chronic but at least manageable condition.

Nevertheless, an HIV vaccine and cure are crucially needed. Thousands of those infected with HIV in impoverished nations still face a grim prognosis of disability and death. And those fortunate enough to receive antiretroviral therapy live with harmful side effects of the medications, such as anemia and heart disease.

So, where are we in our quest for a cure for HIV-AIDS and our ability to manage it? Our speakers will provide some insight.

Coffin, who is a special advisor to the NCI CCR Director as well as an American Cancer Society Research Professor at Tufts School of Medicine, studies the interaction of retroviruses with their host cells and organisms, with a particular emphasis on HIV. Maldarelli, head of the NCI Clinical Retrovirology Section, develops and implements clinical protocols to elucidate mechanisms underlying the emergence of HIV drug resistance in vivo, the dynamics of infection under treatment, and the role of resistance mutations in the efficacy and failure of subsequent treatments.

The Demystifying Medicine Lecture Series is designed to help bridge the gap between advances in biology and their applications to major human diseases. The lectures include presentations of patients, pathology, diagnosis, and therapy in the context of major diseases and current research. All clinicians, trainees including fellows, medical students, Ph.D. students, and other healthcare and research professionals are welcome to attend.
