Description:	Demystifying Medicine Lecture Series Dementia in all its many forms has become a top public health concern worldwide, threatening the gains we have made in life expectancy and leading to a staggering $600 billion annual cost in medical care and lost productivity, according to the World Health Organization. Despite years of research, there is no cure for most dementias nor even effective treatment, aside from proper nutrition when appropriate. But will this change in the era of genomics? (Hint: We think the answer is yes.) For this next and penultimate lecture in the Demystifying Medicine 2019 series, we bring you two speakers who are applying genomic tools to develop therapies for the most common and devastating forms of dementia. Bryan Traynor, a senior investigator in the NIA Laboratory of Neurogenetics, conducted the first genome-wide association study of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). He and his colleagues subsequently identified the underlying mutation in a large proportion of ALS and frontotemporal dementia, and they found that same mutation among patients clinically diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. Traynor's lab continues to be a world leader in neurogenetics. Co-presenter Sonja Scholz is a Lasker Clinical Research Scholar and chief of the NINDS Neurodegenerative Diseases Research Unit. She is searching for mutations associated with numerous neurodegenerative diseases, such as Lewy body dementia and frontotemporal dementia, with the hopes of unraveling the molecular genetic mechanisms that cause these devastating diseases and identifying targets for drug development. The Demystifying Medicine Lecture Series is designed to help bridge the gap between advances in biology and their applications to major human diseases. The lectures include presentations of patients, pathology, diagnosis, and therapy in the context of major diseases and current research. All clinicians, trainees including fellows, medical students, Ph.D. students, and other healthcare and research professionals are welcome to attend.
