Description:	Apolipoprotein E is the only gene that has been unambiguously identified as a risk factor for late-onset Alzheimer’s Disease. The molecular mechanisms by which the e4 isoform of ApoE predisposes to the disease remains shrouded in mystery. Dr. Herz's laboratory investigates the biology of a family of ApoE receptors, also known as the LDL receptor gene family, and their functions in neurons and in other tissues. Their findings show that ApoE receptors are intrinsic components of classical signaling pathways, where they control brain development as well as the integrity of the vascular wall.
