Prof. Lawrence Rajendran is a renowned expert in the cell biology of Alzheimer’s disease. He was born and raised in Chennai, India. He studied Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the University of Madras and then later performed research on protein folding at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. He then spent a year at the Weizmann Institute of Science, Rehovot, Israel studying the cell biology aspects of TNF signaling and later moved to Germany for his PhD. He did his PhD in cellular immunology at the University of Konstanz, Germany and later moved to the Max-Planck Institute of Molecular Cell Biology and Genetics for his Postdoctoral work with Prof. Kai Simons. Here, he started his work on studying the mechanisms by which cells regulate the production of the amyloid ß (Aß) peptide, a central molecule in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer’s disease.

Dr. Rajendran has made pioneering contributions in the field of exosomes and neurodegeneration. He is one of the founding members of the International Society for Extracellular Vesicles (ISEV) and serves in the current board as the Steering committee member. He is the founder of the Facebook platform for the ISEV. He is an Associate Editor at few journals including the Neurodegenerative Diseases, Journal of Extracellular Vesicles and Frontiers in Alzheimer’s disease and Journal of Alzheimer’s disease (2012). He serves on the editorial Board of Molecular Neurodegeneration. On the social side, He is the founder of raise.rural, a non-profit organization dedicated to support rural students in India to pursue research.
