Description:	NIH Director's Seminar Series One overall goal of the Retinal Neurobiology Section (RNS) is to understand how retinal neurons interact (synapses) and how a network of interactions (circuits) transmits visual information. Such knowledge is vital for understanding mechanisms of early visual processing as well as brain functions in general. It will also establish a foundation for understanding pathogenesis of retinal diseases, many of which affect synapses before cell death occurs and almost all of which eventually affect circuits as proper wirings are altered pathologically. A second interest of this section is to understand how the retina adapts to extreme metabolic conditions, such as those experienced by hibernating animals. We believe that metabolism is one of the core issues pertain to the health and disease of the retina. By studying hibernating animals, we hope to identify strategies that can help to better cope with metabolic stresses that often drive retinal diseases.
