Description:	The theme of this year's observance is -- Unity in Diversity: We Shall Overcome. Dr. Ruth L. Kirschstein, Acting Director, NIH will introduce the Keynote speaker, Dr. Freeman A. Hrabowski III, President, University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC). Dr. Hrabowski serves as a consultant to the National Institutes of Health, The National Science Foundation, the National Academy of Sciences, and the U.S. Department of Education. Also a child-leader in the Civil Rights Movement, Dr. Hrabowski was prominently featured in Spike Lee's 1997 documentary, Four Little Girls. UMBC has received numerous awards (eg. The U.S. Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring) in recognition of the nationally acclaimed, multi-million dollar Meyerhoff Scholars Program for gifted African American undergraduates in science and engineering. Dr. Yvonne Maddox, Acting Deputy Director, NIH, will make the closing remarks. The UMBC Gospel Choir will perform at the event.
