Dr. Ulrich Mueller’s laboratory identifies and studies genes that control the function of the auditory sense organ of mammals. His lab also has recently identified numerous gene mutations that cause deafness and regulate the function of the auditory system. Dr. Mueller’s research program also includes the mechanisms that establish neuronal connections between the auditory sense organs and the cerebral cortex, and the formation of cell layers and neuronal circuits within the cortex. His presentation will focus on the recent identification of several key components of the mechanotransduction machinery of hair cells that convert sound stimuli into electrical signals.
