Their studies have shown that behaviors induced by acute or intermittent drug exposure are surprisingly similar in flies and mammals, and that at least some of the neurotransmitter and second messenger systems that mediate these behaviors are conserved. The next big step is to study the role of the mammalian homologs of the Drosophila “drug-genes” in rodent models of addiction. In the last two years, their major focus has been to develop and test technologies needed to transfer information from flies to mice and rats. \n
