\nThe prospective isolation of hematopoietic stem cells (HSC) from mouse and man has allowed us to learn much about their characteristics upon transplantation. While small numbers of HSC are in the blood at any time, 104 HSC flux through the blood of a mouse each day. HSC alone can quantitatively and rapidly reconstitute the hematolymphoid system of syngeneic and of allogenic hosts, the latter in absence of grafts vs. host disease usually caused by contaminating T cells in bone marrow transplants.\n
