\nOne operational measure of our limited understanding of biology is our inability to predict the behavior of biological systems given knowledge of their present states. Under the Alpha project, we are striving to bring into being computational methods and experimental tools to gain the ability to predict the quantitative behavior of a well-understood and experimentally tractable intracellular signal transduction/information-processing network. This regulatory system governs the response of Saccharomyces cerevisiae to mating pheromone secreted by yeast of the opposite sex; it is a prototype for G protein coupled receptor and MAP kinase signaling in higher organisms.\n
