\nThe speaker will consider what is known about growing up in poverty in the United States. As a developmental psychologist, she brings five perspectives to this topic: 1) the health, educational, and emotional outcomes of children and youth who have been identified as being vulnerable due to environmental circumstances; 2) the differential effects of poverty and other negative events upon well-being contingent on when these conditions occur in the first 15 years of life; 3) the biological, psychological, and environmental processes underlying links between poverty and other events impacting upon well-being; 4) the long-term effects of child and youth poverty upon later health and educational outcomes; and 5) the types and timing of interventions that enhance the life chances of poor children. \n
