Avinash Bhandoola received a Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania in 1994, and did a postdoctoral fellowship with Dr. Alfred Singer at NCI focused on the rules underlying linage choice. He joined the faculty of the University of Pennsylvania in 2001, received tenure in 2007, and was promoted to full professor in 2012. His laboratory identified early precursors of T cells in the bone marrow and thymus, described the mechanisms used by precursor cells to migrate to the thymus, and studied transcription factors that imposed the T cell program. Recently, his work also implicated transcription factor T cell factor 1 as playing an important role in the early development of T cells as well as innate lymphoid cells. Avinash joined the Laboratory of Genome Integrity at NCI in 2014 where his team studies the development of T cells, innate lymphocytes, and thymic epithelial cells. Abstract: Innate lymphoid cells (ILC) and T cells have very similar effector functions, controlled by overlapping transcriptional programs. Little is known about the early steps of development of ILC compared to T cells, and it is particularly unclear how these two lineages diverge from each other while keeping access to the same effector programs. We identify a transcriptional program shared between T cells and ILC at early steps of differentiation, which provides a basis for understanding later similarities in T and ILC terminal differentiation and effector function.
