Description:	Immunology Interest Group Seminar Series The principles of respiratory microbiology are being re-evaluated and re-written, starting with the debunked myth of lung sterility. The “terrain” of the respiratory ecosystem differs - anatomically and physiologically - from that other mucosal sites, and changes dramatically in illness, when the dynamic homeostasis between host and the microbiome is disrupted. In the past decade, culture-independent techniques of microbial identification have revealed a previously unappreciated complexity to the microbial ecosystem of the respiratory tract. Furthermore, chronically inflamed or diseased lungs harbor a previously unappreciated diversity of Pseudomonas species that are distinct from Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The vast majority belong to the Pseudomonas fluorescens-species complex and the pathogenic implications of low-level colonization by P. fluorescens species complex members during lung disease is an evolving area of investigation. We have identified a new species of Pseudomonas with pathogenic potential in samples from human lung transplant recipients, subjects with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), subjects with interstitial pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) and an inbred mouse model of pulmonary inflammation; it is rarely detected in healthy human airways.
