Description:	Synapses in the brain are responsible for who we are and how we perceive the world around us. Dr. Isaacson's lab explores the fundamental features shaping the strength of synaptic transmission in the brain. What factors limit the spatial and temporal domain of transmitter action and govern transmitter release from presynaptic nerve terminals? Their current work targets two systems: the central synaptic pathways involved in the processing of sound and smell. Dr. Isaacson's lab uses electrophysiological and optical recording techniques to study neurons in brain slices of the olfactory bulb and auditory brainstem.
