A 37 member PHS team was deployed for Hurricane Katrina from August 30 to September 9. Our missions included the following:

* Setting up and maintaining a 200 bed acute care field hospital on the LSU campus in Baton Rouge

* Carrying out evaluation of hospitals throughout 8 severely affected parishes in order to meet their acute needs

Our speakers will focus on the functioning of the field hospital, mental health needs, infectious disease issues, and hospital assessment. We will discuss what worked well and what was lacking in the overall response to this unprecedented disaster, from our point of view. Many other NIH PHS officers and civilians deployed for the hurricane; this presentation is meant to describe the activities of just one team.
