Description: The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, in cooperation with the NIH Clinical Center, will feature a personal appearance by internationally acclaimed pianist Leon Fleisher. Maestro Leon Fleisher was featured in the NIH Hatfield Clinical Research Center dedication book and is associated with the national “Freedom to Play” awareness campaign which aims to focus attention to the importance of research and treatment for musicians and other artists with injuries. In 1965, Maestro Fleisher lost the use of his right hand to focal dystonia, a common movement disorder. He was a patient at the NIH Clinical Center and has now returned to playing with both hands. His November 17 appearance is offered in Thanksgiving for the innovative treatment he received at the NIH, therapy which has helped to reverse his condition.
