||Dr. Murthy focuses on mechanisms of synaptic transmission and plasticity. A major effort is directed towards understanding presynaptic mechanisms, in particular synaptic vesicle mobilization and release. Using high-resolution fluorescence microscopy they can detect elementary synaptic events such as release and reuptake of single synaptic vesicles. Therefore, the functional properties (e.g., release probability) of individual visualized synapses can be precisely quantified. Identified synapses can also be monitored over long periods of time, which allows the characterization of their growth and development.
