Description: The NIH Tribal Health Research Office (THRO) invites you to join us in celebrating 2019 National Native American Heritage Month (NNAHM). NNAHM is a time to celebrate the rich cultures, diverse traditions and histories of American Indians/Alaska Natives (AI/AN) and to acknowledge their important contributions in research. This year’s special guest lecturer is Dr. Melissa Walls, a principal investigator for NIH Research Project Grants and Associate Professor at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in addition to serving as Director for the Great Lakes Hub for the Johns Hopkins Center for American Indian Health. Dr. Walls' involvement in community-based participatory research has allowed her to work with AI/AN communities to identify key drivers of community health. Utilizing data from NIH funded research, Dr. Walls' lecture will describe trajectories of early life course substance use, mental health challenges, and enduring mental health among AI/AN communities. Dr. Walls is also a member of the National Advisory Council on Drug Abuse, has been recognized by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation as an Interdisciplinary Research Leader, and serves as a mentor to AI/AN students.
