Description: Demystifying Medicine

Part career expo, part crystal-ball gazing, this popular Demystifying Medicine session held at the end of each lecture season presents new job opportunities and scientific emerging trends for the well-trained NIH postdoc, along with traditional opportunities often overlooked.

Michael Gottesman is the NIH Deputy Director of Intramural Research (DDIR) and also chief of the NCI Laboratory of Cell Biology. As DDIR, Gottesman oversees and ultimately approves the hiring of all NIH principal investigators. As an NCI branch chief, he has mentored and helped find jobs for dozens of postdocs who have passed through his lab. Moreover, as an award-winning scientist and member of both the National Academy of Science and National Academy of Medicine, Gottesman has a keen understanding of which scientific fields show the most promise.

Similarly, co-presenter Sharon Milgram, director of the NIH Office of Intramural Training and Education (OITE), has her finger on the pulse of scientific employment trends. Under her leadership, the NIH training program has gained international distinction for its recruitment and subsequent career development of a diverse cadre of early-career scientists. Lastly and humbly, Win Arias, the guy who's sending this message and who created and runs Demystifying Medicine, will elucidate career opportunities for PhDs in academic medical schools and other clinical settings.

Prediction is very difficult, especially about the future. So goes the Danish proverb. But then again, prediction is the nature of science. Any postdoc hoping to work…and we're assuming there are many of you in this category…will want to attend this Demystifying Medicine session.

The Demystifying Medicine Lecture Series is designed to help bridge the gap between advances in biology and their applications to major human diseases. The lectures include presentations of patients, pathology, diagnosis, and therapy in the context of major diseases and current research. All clinicians, trainees including fellows, medical students, Ph.D. students, and other healthcare and research professionals are welcome to attend.
